How the China visa works

China uses a letter-based visa system, and the letter you pick determines which documents the consulate expects. L is tourism, M is commerce and trade, F is non-commercial exchange, and picking the wrong one means the file is rejected at the counter regardless of how strong the rest of it is. The online form is long, and the sections on previous travel and family details are checked against the passport stamps and against previous applications. Fingerprints are captured at the visa centre for most applicants.

Where China applications go wrong

Wrong visa category, wrong documents

A business trip filed as tourism, or a trade fair filed as an exchange visit, means the supporting documents do not match the category. This is the most frequent cause of refusal for Indian applicants.

Travel history must match the passport stamps

The online form asks for countries visited in recent years. Omissions are visible to the consular officer, who has your passport in hand. Incomplete declarations are treated as concealment.

Employer and invitation details must reconcile

Company name, address and contact details on the form, on the employer letter and on the Chinese invitation letter must be identical. Small variations in how a company name is written trigger verification calls.
